EU Takes Bold Step to Protect Children from Addictive Social Media
The European Union is set to introduce new rules to protect children from harmful design practices on social media platforms like TikTok, Meta, and X. The legislation aims to ban manipulative, addictive features and misleading marketing, as part of its Digital Fairness Act to be proposed later this year.
The European Union is intensifying efforts to protect children from the potentially harmful effects of social media. EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen announced upcoming regulations aimed at curbing addictive design features on platforms such as TikTok, Meta, and X.
The new Digital Fairness Act will tackle manipulative practices, including misleading influencer marketing. It will also propose age restrictions for social media access, reflecting Europe's toughened stance on U.S. tech giants.
These measures will build upon the existing Digital Services Act to ensure digital platforms address illegal and harmful content. The regulation comes as other nations globally consider similar legislative actions to protect young users.
