Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Monday questioned the feasibility of the Malwa canal project announced by the AAP government to meet the irrigation needs of the state's southern region.
Warring pointed out that previous governments had deemed the project unfeasible on technical grounds based on surveys. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann recently announced the 150-km long canal, emphasizing its potential to irrigate nearly two lakh acres and bring economic prosperity to the Malwa region.
However, Warring has called for comprehensive deliberation on the technical, social, economic, and environmental aspects before initiating the project. He expressed concerns about the environmental impact, funding availability, and logistical challenges in distributing water across 22 blocks, noting that the variation in ground height complicates the water supply.
