Maharashtra's Shaktipeeth Expressway: Balancing Growth with Farmers' Concerns

On Wednesday, the Maharashtra legislative council witnessed an intense debate as opposition members urged the government to reconsider the proposed Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway, fearing adverse impacts on farmers. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, however, maintained that the project promises substantial benefits to citizens.

The project, set to span 802 kilometers and link key pilgrimage sites between Nagpur and Goa, faces objections primarily from farmers in Kolhapur and Sangli over land acquisition demands. Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve highlighted the protests held by affected farmers, seeking clarity on the government's stance, especially since a former chief minister had previously considered halting the project.

Chief Minister Fadnavis responded by assuring that the administration supports the roadway's development without coercion. He cited backing from farmers who met him personally, and reiterated the project's potential to transform several Marathwada districts significantly, drawing parallels to the success of the Samruddhi Expressway.
