From Friday, fares for Mumbai's BEST buses will see a significant increase, with the minimum fare doubling to Rs 10. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has approved the fare revision, which applies to both non-AC and AC bus services across the city.
The new fare structure introduces more pricing stages, raising costs substantially for longer journeys. Previously, the maximum fare for non-AC and AC buses was capped at Rs 20 and Rs 25 for distances over 20 km. The revision is expected to generate an additional Rs 590 crore in annual ticketing revenue, as BEST grapples with financial challenges.
Once a thriving transport network, BEST has experienced a drop in passenger revenue below Rs 700 crore over the last two years. While the organization has already reduced its fleet size due to vehicle scrapping, the fare changes might affect public sentiment and the overall ridership.
