A dramatic scene unfolded at Newport station in Jersey City on Monday morning when a fire broke out on a Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) commuter train. The blaze, which began at 6:19 am, sent thick smoke billowing through at least one train car, prompting an immediate evacuation of passengers.
Video recorded by a passenger captured the tense moments as commuters called for calm, urging others to 'open the door' and 'take it easy.' Flames leapt from the rails, nearly reaching the ceiling of the train car, creating an alarming scene as riders disembarked to safety.
According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the line, 13 individuals were treated for smoke inhalation at the site. Nine of these were transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as PATH trains typically transport around 165,000 passengers daily between New Jersey and Manhattan.
