In a week marked by disruptions, IndiGo, India's premier domestic airline, canceled a staggering 1,600 flights in a single day, owing to adjustments in flight duty norms for pilots. The operational chaos left passengers stranded and prompted an apology from the airline, which struggled to maintain its on-time performance.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued temporary relaxations to the new regulations following IndiGo's requests, allowing the airline to adjust quickly to the changes. Despite this, the pilot associations expressed strong disapproval, citing safety risks and regulatory inconsistencies. The Ministry of Civil Aviation's intervention put the implementation of the norms on hold.
Amid these developments, IndiGo vowed to restore full network connectivity and improve stability in its operations. However, concerns about the airline's long-standing staffing strategy remain, as highlighted by pilots' unions demanding adherence to court-mandated safety measures.
