Nigerian Aviation Struggles: Jet Fuel Crisis Escalates

Soaring jet fuel prices and supply shortages are impacting Nigeria's aviation sector, causing flight delays and operational challenges. The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers highlights the increased risk of crew fatigue and safety concerns. The crisis exacerbates issues worsened by currency volatility and high maintenance costs.

Nigerian airlines are confronting an intensified crisis as jet fuel prices soar and supply shortages wreak havoc across the aviation industry. Industry groups, including the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), express concerns about disrupted flight schedules and lengthy crew rotations, which heighten safety risks.

NAAPE President Captain Bunmi Gindeh points out that fuel scarcity has pushed crew members beyond their planned limits, compromising safety margins. Meanwhile, local carrier Rano Air has described certain routes as commercially unsustainable due to the quadrupled costs of jet fuel.

Amid difficult conditions, airlines are rescheduling or canceling flights and cutting underperforming routes. As the aviation sector grapples with volatility and infrastructural constraints, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced that jet fuel prices would not be capped.
