Beijing Challenges US Tariff Plan Amid Hopes for Trade Talks
China has opposed additional US tariffs, citing them as protectionist tools, while expressing optimism for future trade negotiations. Beijing is urging Washington to focus on reciprocal tariff cuts, suggesting this could stabilize trade relations. The discussions will test implementation speed and definition clarity for 'non-sensitive' products.
In a recent development, Beijing has strongly opposed the United States Trade Representative's (USTR) plan to impose additional tariffs, accusing the effort of leveraging allegations of forced labor as a protectionist guise. However, China has also welcomed signals from Washington suggesting a potential ease of tariffs on non-sensitive goods.
China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has reiterated its stance against unilateral trade measures through a statement on social media platform X, calling for collaboration with the U.S. to stabilize China-US trade relations. Citing the USTR's Section 301 investigation, MOFCOM warned that increased tariffs could disrupt bilateral trade.
Amidst these tensions, both nations are discussing a newly conceived 'Board of Trade' mechanism aimed at discussing reciprocal tariff reductions. The move is designed to harmonize the trading relationship and is seen as a positive step towards expanding trade ties. However, the implementation speed of this mechanism remains crucial as stakeholders watch closely for concrete terms.
