Nagasaki's mayor extended an invitation on Thursday to all countries and regions, urging them to attend the upcoming 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing memorial. This move aims to highlight the devastating consequences of nuclear warfare.
Representatives from 157 diplomatic entities in Japan, including Russia, Belarus, and Israel, are primed to participate, marking a shift from last year's exclusions. The mayor asserts that such participation is crucial as global conflicts escalate.
Despite Japan's harrowing history with nuclear attacks, it continues to depend on the US for nuclear deterrence. While inviting Israel is skipped over potential unrest linked to the Gaza conflict, this decision sparked critiques from Western allies and threatens diplomatic ties.
