A Gaza-based water company serving nearly half of the enclave's population has ceased operations in response to Hamas detaining one of its staff members. Youssef Yassin, a board member of Abdul Salam Yassin Company, emphasized the impact on over a million residents dependent on the company for water.
More than 70 trucks responsible for distributing water across Gaza have halted their services, further complicating an already fragile supply chain affected by war-damaged pipelines. Yassin stressed the importance of employee safety, citing it as a non-negotiable priority amidst the ensuing crisis.
Hamas provided no explanation for the arrest, while global actors insist the group disarm and withdraw from power. The ongoing protest highlights growing unrest in Gaza as water scarcity worsens due to disrupted supplies and destroyed infrastructure reliant on scarce fuel-powered generators.
