A 65-year-old farmer in Mahasamund district attempted suicide by slitting his throat, underscoring the desperation faced amid bureaucratic challenges in the paddy procurement process. The incident has triggered an official inquiry into the matter.
Sources say the farmer, Manbodh Gada, was driven to the drastic action on discovering that token issuance required to sell paddy fell through because of a discrepancy in mobile number updates. Gada, who urgently needed funds for his daughter's wedding, is currently in critical condition and being treated in Raipur.
This shocking event has brought sharp political attention, with former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel highlighting alleged mismanagement under the BJP-led government, claiming farmers endure severe stress due to the procurement process.
