Mumbai authorities have initiated legal proceedings against 367 individuals accused of obtaining birth certificates through fraudulent means, as confirmed by officials. The Mulund Police Station filed the FIR following a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya, who named four individuals as key suspects.

The charges involve sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Birth Registration Act. A significant number of those implicated are suspected Bangladeshi immigrants, sparking concerns about document forging aimed at securing citizenship rights illegally.

Somaiya has been vocal about this issue, commending Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his directive to clamp down on illegal immigrants. The crackdown has seen numerous arrests, and further probes are expected to dismantle the entire network of fraudulent activities.

In a stern move, Fadnavis reportedly instructed state police and district administrations to take decisive action against the illegal settlement of Bangladeshi nationals, alongside announcing imminent deportations. This highlights the state's ongoing efforts to curb illegal immigration and document forgery.

Previously, Somaiya revealed the arrest of 43 Bangladeshi nationals in Jalgaon for similar offenses, involving document theft from an Executive Magistrate's office. These actions reflect broader measures to tackle and dismantle such illegal networks. (ANI)
