In a significant move, the Lok Sabha engaged in discussions over the SHANTI Bill, presented by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who hailed it as a milestone for India's development. The bill seeks to unlock the tightly-regulated civil nuclear sector, allowing private participation to meet India's ambitious target of generating 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047.
The debate intensified as opposition members raised concerns over the dilution of supplier liability clauses, fearing potential risks in the event of a nuclear incident. Criticisms also centered on the bill's repeal of previous atomic energy legislation and lack of autonomy for the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
Congress member Manish Tewari argued for further examination of the bill, citing worries about waste management and the neglect of India's traditional nuclear programs. With tensions running high, calls for a Joint Committee of Parliament to thoroughly review the bill were made, highlighting the complexities in balancing energy goals with safety and sovereignty.
