In a strategic move to diversify its energy markets, Russia's foremost liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer, Novatek, has sealed a preliminary contract with a buyer from Vietnam. This agreement positions Novatek to begin LNG supplies imminently, CEO Leonid Mikhelson announced on Russian state television on Monday.

The accord comes amid a diplomatic visit by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to Moscow and after extensive negotiations reportedly spanning over five years. According to Mikhelson, the preliminary supply agreement was only recently finalized with the Vietnamese party.

PetroVietnam Gas has been confirmed to be in discussions with Novatek, as Russia recalibrates its gas export strategy. This shift is in response to President Vladimir Putin's recent statements indicating potential cessation of gas supplies to Europe, aiming instead to secure more enduring engagements with other regions.
