In an alarming trend, myopia is on the rise among children, primarily driven by increased screen time and reduced outdoor activities, according to Dr. Jeewan Singh, former Chief of Dr. RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, New Delhi. The condition, commonly known as nearsightedness, is exacerbating with digital learning norms and hereditary factors.
Dr. Singh emphasizes the need for primary treatment strategies, such as decreasing screen exposure, promoting outdoor play, and utilizing proper eyewear. In progressive cases of myopia, he suggests treatments may include low-dose atropine drops or specialized lenses, along with enhancing regular vision screening efforts in schools for early detection.
Dr. Digvijay Singh from Noble Eye Care, Gurugram, describes the burgeoning use of spectacles among today's youth, advocating for conscious screen usage habits. He recommends the 20-20-20 rule, proper lighting, and maintaining an optimal viewing distance to mitigate eye strain, while also encouraging at least two hours outdoors daily for natural light exposure.
