In a groundbreaking step for Assam's agricultural sector, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ceremonially initiated the export of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged litchis, known as the 'Piyaji' variety, from Tezpur to Singapore. The departure of a 500-kilogram consignment from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport marks a significant expansion of Assam's presence in international markets.
This development follows the recent successful export of Assam's litchis to Dubai, highlighting growing global interest in the state's premium produce. The Chief Minister emphasized that this achievement results from the government's focused efforts in enhancing market linkages and export infrastructure. Notably, the Singapore High Commissioner has shown interest in an additional 500 kilograms of litchis.
Highlighting challenges and opportunities, Sarma pointed out that current production is limited to around 3,000 trees. While demand outpaces supply, initiatives like sending litchis to key officials, including the Prime Minister, aim to boost awareness. Looking ahead, the government is committed to scaling up production and exports, potentially extending to other produce like ginger and jackfruit.
