Luxury Cruise Ship's Hantavirus Nightmare
A luxury cruise ship off Cape Verde, hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak, is set to head to Spain. South Africa identified a rare human-transmissible strain among victims. Three deaths, including a Dutch couple and a German national, have occurred, with contact tracing underway. Spanish authorities plan to dock the ship in Tenerife.
A luxury cruise ship, stranded off Cape Verde due to a hantavirus outbreak, is now bound for Spain. Nearly 150 passengers were on board the MV Hondius, where a deadly strain of the virus was confirmed by South African health officials. This strain, rarely transmissible between humans, left three passengers dead.
South Africa has identified a strain among the victims that can spread to humans, although such cases are rare. One British passenger remains in intensive care, and the Netherlands is preparing evacuations as WHO maintains the public threat is low.
Authorities in Spain, pressed by international bodies, have agreed to dock the ship in Tenerife, though local leaders express concerns. Meanwhile, contact tracing continues for potentially exposed individuals, including crew and healthcare workers.
