EU's Strategic Shift: Aligning with India Amid Geopolitical Tensions

The recent visit by the European Commission and European Union leaders to India during the Republic Day Parade has been interpreted as more than just a nod to the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Robinder Sachdev, a Foreign Affairs expert, emphasized that the timing underscores Europe's increasing geopolitical discomfort, particularly in its ties with the United States, amidst mounting global pressures.
Sachdev noted that the EU is navigating a transformed strategic landscape, influenced by the Ukraine conflict and resulting sanctions against Russia, which have severed Europe's access to Russian energy. As the EU seeks to reduce economic dependency on China, India emerges as a potential 'fourth pole' in Europe's geopolitical equation, offering a large and growing market that aligns with Europe's need for reliable, diversified partnerships.
While the FTA is mutually beneficial, offering India access to the EU's vast economy and Europe a chance to diversify economic risks, Sachdev highlights a contrast. Historically reliant on the US, Europe is now exploring broader relationships, similar to India's diversified foreign policy strategy. This recalibration comes as traditional alliances face stress, amid a fragmented global order.
