Three men arrested for allegedly trying to extort money from a woman professor here and driving her to suicide transferred money to a person in Pakistan, police said on Wednesday. The accused converted the money into USDT, a cryptocurrency, before transferring it, Surat police said in a release.

On April 16, a woman professor of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train. Investigation revealed that a gang of blackmailers was trying to extort money from her by threatening to circulate her morphed photos. City police arrested three members of the gang from Jamui and Patna districts of Bihar earlier this month. Two more men and a woman are still absconding.

Some of the victims of the gang lived in different parts of Gujarat including Surat and Vadodara while some were residents of Arunachal Pradesh and Maharashtra, the city police said.

As many as 72 UPI IDs were found on the accused's mobile phones, said the release.

The police remand of the accused has been extended till May 20.

The arrested trio were fond of a lavish lifestyle which they funded through blackmailing and extortion, police said.

After deducting their share, they purchased USDT from Binance crypto currency exchange and transferred it to a Gmail ID of one Mian Zulfikar, probe found.

When police sought information from Google about the mail ID, they learnt that it was operated from an IP address registered in Lahore. A Pakistani phone number stored in the mobile phone of one of the accused was linked to this email ID, said the release.

Further probe is on.
