In Serbia, a wave of anti-government protests has erupted following a tragic incident where a railway station roof collapse claimed 14 lives. The demonstrators, gathered in Belgrade, are calling for the arrest of those responsible and the resignation of top officials.
The tragic event has heightened allegations of widespread corruption and inadequate renovation work linked to Chinese state companies involved in Serbia's infrastructure projects. Borislav Novakovic, former mayor of Novi Sad where the incident occurred, blamed the ruling populists, accusing them of profiting at the cost of citizens' lives.
Although Serbia's construction minister has resigned and an official investigation is underway, the country remains tense. Last week's protest turned violent in Novi Sad, contrasting Monday's peaceful rally. As of now, there have been no arrests related to the incident, adding to public distrust of the government's ability to ensure accountability.
