The Gujarat government on Wednesday approved the creation of the Vav-Tharad district by bifurcating Banaskantha, a decision made in the state's Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, who is also a government spokesperson, announced that the decision addresses the old public demand to reduce the administrative burden and bring governance closer to the people. Vav-Tharad, which will have its headquarters in Tharad town, will consist of eight talukas.
Banaskantha district, known for its extensive area and number of talukas, will now retain six talukas with its headquarters in Palanpur. The change means each district will have roughly 600 villages. Vav-Tharad will cover 6,257 square kilometers, while Banaskantha will span 4,486 square kilometers.
