Sudan's Crisis: UN Seeks $6 Billion Amid Worsening Humanitarian Emergency
The United Nations is appealing for $6 billion to aid Sudan, amid escalating crises including mass displacement and famine. This request is a 40% increase from last year. The ongoing conflict between Sudan's army and paramilitary forces has exacerbated hunger, displacement, and attacks, particularly in Darfur.
The United Nations has issued a plea for $6 billion in international aid this year to address an unfolding humanitarian crisis in Sudan, marked by widespread displacement and an escalating famine situation.
The appeal comes in the wake of an over 40% increase from last year's aid request for Sudan, at a time when global aid budgets are under significant pressure. The crisis is fueled by a 22-month conflict between Sudan's military forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has already displaced 20% of the population and caused severe hunger affecting roughly half the country's residents.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher described the situation as a "humanitarian emergency of shocking proportions," citing famine conditions, rampant sexual violence, and casualties amongst children. Despite some aid agencies receiving waivers to provide assistance, uncertainty continues about the extent of permitted famine relief coverage. The UN's plan aims to reach nearly 21 million people, representing its most ambitious relief effort for Sudan to date, requiring $4.2 billion dedicated specifically to addressing internal needs.
