Kizza Besigye, a prominent opposition politician in Uganda, has been charged with treason by a magistrates' court, a move that has sparked concern and protests across the country. His lawyer's request for medical transfer was dismissed, despite Besigye's frail state following a hunger strike.
Besigye and his aide were reportedly detained in Nairobi and brought back to Uganda to face several charges, including illegal weapons possession. After a Supreme Court ruling declared trying civilians in military courts unconstitutional, his case was transferred to a civilian court.
The Commonwealth has called for his release, emphasizing the growing alarm over Uganda's political climate under President Museveni, in power since 1986. Legal proceedings continue as officials deny human rights violations, affirming due court processes.
