UK Halts Aid to Rwanda Amid Congo Conflict Allegations
The UK has paused some aid to Rwanda and imposed diplomatic sanctions over its alleged support of the M23 group in Congo's conflict. While Rwanda denies backing the group, the UK demands a withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congo and encourages dialogue as a political solution.
Britain has taken a firm stance against Rwanda, halting some bilateral aid and imposing diplomatic sanctions over the country's alleged involvement in the Congo conflict. The UK government announced these measures on Tuesday, citing Rwanda's suspected support for the M23 rebel group.
Despite Kigali's denial of backing M23, Rwanda faces mounting international scrutiny as the group continues to capture significant territory in eastern Congo, including key cities and mineral-rich areas. The UK emphasized its concern over Rwanda's military presence in Congo and called for a political resolution.
The British response includes reducing high-level event attendance, curtailing trade promotions, and suspending direct financial aid to Rwanda's government, except for support to the most vulnerable populations. Additionally, future defence training assistance and export licenses for Rwanda's Defence Force are under review. The UK stressed the necessity of diplomatic engagement to resolve the conflict.
