The suspects, including the injured 25-year-old Deepak Kumar from Bihar, were notorious for duping people using a cunning ATM card trick.
Police officers apprehended the gang near Kesura in the Badagada police station area after receiving a tip-off about their presence on the Bhubaneswar-Puri bypass. When the police team attempted to nab them, the suspects opened fire, prompting a self-defence response that left Kumar injured and undergoing treatment.
