The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is taking decisive steps to address internal criticisms by announcing plans to frame new rules governing the qualification, appointment, jurisdiction, and retirement of the Akal Takht jathedar. This comes on the heels of controversy over the recent dismissal of several prominent jathedars.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has indicated that a high-level committee will oversee the formulation of these rules, ensuring that the principle of 'one person, one position' is strictly adhered to. The new guidelines will be crucial in appointing a replacement for the vacant position of Akal Takht jathedar, while safeguarding the principles of the Sikh Rehat Maryada.
The upcoming budget session of the SGPC will see the presentation and approval of a resolution concerning these changes. Dhami emphasized that these measures are essential to combat anti-Sikh forces and maintain unity within the community. In addition, efforts will be made to ensure a respectful retirement process for departing jathedars.
