The Trinamool Congress has raised concerns over the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, questioning the central government's authority to legislate on matters not included in the concurrent list. TMC Rajya Sabha Party Leader Derek O'Brien voiced his concerns in a social media post, declaring the Bill as a threat to federalism.
O'Brien criticized the government for bypassing thorough consultation, noting only one in ten bills undergo such scrutiny. He emphasized the need for the bill to be examined further before proceeding any further, reflecting broader concerns about the legislative process.
The Bill, which passed the Lok Sabha in December, aims to enhance the national and state disaster management authorities and clarify roles among stakeholders. It also seeks to officially recognize existing organizations like the National Crisis Management Committee.
