EU Support Hits Record High Amid Security Concerns
Support for the European Union among citizens has reached a record high, with three quarters acknowledging its benefits in maintaining peace and security. A Eurobarometer poll reveals that protection from global crises is increasingly vital to citizens, influenced by recent conflicts and economic challenges.
A new Eurobarometer poll unveiled that support for the European Union among its citizens has soared to unprecedented levels, with 74% saying EU membership benefits their nation. This marks the highest approval since the poll began in 1983, with peace and security emerging as primary reasons.
The survey arrives in the context of three years of war in Ukraine and growing concerns about potential Russian aggression. It highlights citizens' increased prioritization of the EU's role in safeguarding peace, especially given uncertainties about future US protection under NATO.
Despite the EU's limited role in defense, ongoing initiatives to boost collective defense spending and capabilities are proving popular. The survey also brings to light economic fears, as citizens anticipate decreased living standards and call for the EU to address rising costs and industrial challenges from global competitors like China and the US.
