In a significant development, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has apprehended two individuals from Tarn Taran district for corruption. Accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 37,000, the suspects are Sawinder Singh, a registry clerk, and Malkeet Singh, a deed writer, both stationed in Bhikhiwind.
The arrest came after Gurbhej Singh, who had faced procedural hurdles over the registry of his ancestral land, lodged a complaint with the bureau. Singh claimed that despite fulfilling all official requirements for the land transfer, he couldn't complete the process without paying a bribe.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges within the land registry system, as officials allegedly maneuver to extract illicit payments from citizens. Punjab's vigilance authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure accountability and transparency in governance.
