In a devastating series of events in Congo's North Kivu province, suspected Islamist rebels have killed at least 30 individuals, a Congolese military official confirmed on Saturday. The attacks unfolded in Bapere village between Wednesday and Friday, heightening concerns about regional security.

Col Alain Kiwawa, the military administrator of the Lubero territory, reported that more than a hundred people are being held hostage in addition to the fatalities. Samuel Kaheni, president of the Bapere civil society organization, detailed that the victims were primarily killed with knives, and several homes were torched during the assaults.

The attacks are attributed to the Islamic State-aligned Allied Democratic Force (ADF), notorious for their brutal tactics. This incident complicates the eastern region's security challenges, where various armed groups continue to clash. Lubero's military administrator has urged residents to stay vigilant amid fears of further violence.
