A court in Bangladesh has sentenced Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister, to five years in prison for her role in a land scam, while her niece, British MP Tulip Siddiq, received a two-year sentence. The ruling also saw Hasina's sister, Sheikh Rehana, jailed for seven years.
Judge Md Rabiul Alam issued the verdict in Dhaka against 17 individuals accused of corruption related to land allocation, including senior political figures and their families. Each defendant must also pay Tk 1 lakh or face an additional six months' imprisonment.
The court's decision follows multiple corruption cases involving Hasina, with accusations of unlawful land acquisitions during her premiership. Though based in London, Siddiq denies the charges and faces extradition challenges. The ruling ignited discussions on political bias and the integrity of anti-corruption efforts in Bangladesh.
