A political storm erupted in the Madhya Pradesh assembly as Congress MLAs exited en masse, accusing the government of authorizing rampant deforestation in Singrauli district. The legislators allege that the widespread felling of six lakh trees is for the benefit of the Adani Group's coal mining ventures, endangering local tribal communities.
The state government, however, dismissed these charges, stating that tree cutting is conducted within legal frameworks, emphasizing reforestation efforts elsewhere. Minister of State for Forests, Dilip Ahirwar, assured compliance with all relevant rules, but unrest persisted among opposition ranks.
The controversy heightened as inconsistencies surfaced regarding the invocation of the PESA Act. Despite assurances from the government, the Congress accused a minister of misinformation, escalating tensions and prompting further questions about the legality and transparency of the ongoing developments in Singrauli.
