The Battle for Equality: Women SSC Officers in the Indian Air Force Seek Permanent Commission

The Supreme Court is addressing allegations of gender discrimination in granting permanent commissions to Short Service Commission (SSC) women officers in the Indian Air Force. Although both men and women have been inducted since 2019, challenges persist, with claims of unfair treatment against women. A decision is pending.

The Supreme Court is currently examining claims of discrimination against women officers in the Indian Air Force who have been denied permanent commissions. Despite the induction of 243 men and 177 women since 2019, advocates argue that women face unfair treatment.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati argued that the officers were evaluated under the Human Resource Policy of 2019, which provides multiple opportunities for consideration. However, some could not be granted commissions due to performance criteria or limited vacancies.

The court has reserved its verdict, with a focus on issues common to the Army, Navy, and Air Force women's petitions. It underscores the ongoing struggle for equality, with the bench deferring submissions until December.
