The lighting of a traditional lamp at a hilltop temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has ignited a political storm, with the BJP claiming that opposition parties are engaging in more than just vote-bank politics. The party accuses them of launching a structural attack on India's identity, calling it a serious threat to the nation's democratic and secular values.
The controversy stems from an order by Judge G R Swaminathan of the Madras High Court, instructing temple authorities to light the lamp, which opposition MPs are challenging by attempting to impeach the judge. The BJP spokesperson, Sudhanshu Trivedi, accuses the opposition of trying to intimidate the judiciary, alleging that this is part of a broader agenda against constitutional institutions.
The row heated up as Tamil Nadu's local administration allegedly thwarted devotees from performing the ritual, resulting in the arrest of state BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran and others. Despite a court ruling allowing the ritual, the state government has escalated the matter to the Supreme Court. The BJP vows to resist any attempts to quash Hindu traditions, warning of nationwide repercussions.
