The Supreme Court has transferred the high-profile case concerning the rape and murder of a trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College to the Calcutta High Court. The move follows the apex court's suo motu cognisance of the case back in 2024.
Justice MM Sundresh and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma have ordered that all case documents be sent to the high court and a status report copy be given to the victim's family. The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was discovered deceased in the hospital seminar room on August 9 last year, leading to the arrest of civic volunteer Sanjay Roy.
While Roy received a life sentence in January from a Kolkata trial court, the Supreme Court is addressing further issues, such as unauthorised doctor absences. In response to the crime, a National Task Force was formed to develop guidelines for safeguarding medical professionals.
