The Karnataka Legislative Assembly has taken a significant step toward simplifying tax compliance by passing the Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The amendment aims to reduce procedural burdens and streamline governance by eliminating the requirement to file returns once the professional tax is paid.

According to state Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, taxpayers need only pay a flat rate of Rs 2,500, with no further paperwork required. This change aligns with technological advancements and is intended to cut unnecessary administrative tasks, particularly benefiting professionals by sparing them from redundant compliance activities.

Further exemptions are extended to groups such as senior citizens, armed forces personnel, and individuals with disabilities. These changes are expected to enhance public convenience, improve governance, and reduce paperwork, thus receiving a positive reception from political leaders including the Opposition's R Ashoka.
