Apple vs. Indian Regulator: A Clash Over Antitrust Penalties
Apple is challenging India's competition commission's authority in a case related to its iPhone apps market, resisting orders to provide financial data for penalty calculation, potentially amounting to $38 billion. The legal battle reflects broader global antitrust issues faced by Apple, particularly in critical markets like India.
Apple has formally accused India's competition authority of overreaching in its demands for financial data related to an antitrust investigation concerning the company's iPhone apps marketplace. The conflict arises as Apple disputes the legal framework governing penalty calculations in India.
In a confidential court submission revealed by Reuters, Apple indicated the financial repercussions could reach up to $38 billion. Apple contends it has challenged the entirety of the antitrust penalty law in an Indian court, hence arguing the competition body should refrain from enforcing financial submission requests.
The court case in India is one of several global antitrust challenges faced by Apple, as the company holds a modest but growing share of the Indian smartphone market, predominantly occupied by Google's Android system.
