The Union Cabinet has approved a bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court, a move expected to enhance the efficiency of India's judicial system. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that this decision would facilitate faster justice delivery, particularly for petitioners from underprivileged and remote areas.
Currently, the Supreme Court's sanctioned strength is 34, including the Chief Justice of India. With the new amendment, four additional justices will be appointed, bringing the total to 38. The decision marks a significant development since the last increase in 2019 when the court's strength was raised from 30 to 33, excluding the Chief Justice.
The bill, proposed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, will be introduced in the coming session of Parliament. The Supreme Court's expansion is based on recommendations from the Chief Justice of India and involves consultation with the Finance Ministry before a draft is submitted for Cabinet approval.
