Tensions Escalate as Russia Rejects Ukraine's Proposed Ceasefire

Ukraine accused Russia of violating a ceasefire proposal by launching numerous attacks, air strikes, and drone strikes, described by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as Moscow's disregard for peace. The proposed ceasefire was to start on May 6, countering Russian President Vladimir Putin's own ceasefire to coincide with World War Two victory commemorations.

Zelenskiy stated that Russia, which did not confirm adherence to Ukraine's proposal, committed 1,820 violations by Wednesday morning. In the northeastern Sumy region, two individuals were killed in Russian drone attacks targeting a civilian car and an empty kindergarten. Major cities like Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia reported damage to private and industrial properties from air attacks.

Amid stalled U.S.-backed peace negotiations, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia's rejection of diplomacy. As Russia plans a scaled-down military parade, Zelenskiy hinted at possible further Ukrainian actions. Russia threatened a massive missile attack on Kyiv during victory celebrations, leading to heightened tensions.
