In a decisive move, the Supreme Court has suspended the conviction of Yatin Oza, president of the Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association, who had previously been found guilty of contempt of court. This latest reprieve comes as an act of ‘final forgiveness’ from the apex court, with the decision invoking the powers of Article 142 of the Constitution.
The bench, comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and A S Chandurkar, mandated that the Gujarat High Court undertake a review of Oza’s conduct every two years. This ongoing evaluation follows an undertaking by Oza, expressing regret over his past behaviors that included scandalous remarks against the state judiciary.
Oza, a figure often embroiled in legal controversies, had earlier lost his ‘senior advocate’ status in 2020. Despite these challenges, he remains a significant figure in legal circles, having been elected for the 19th time as the president of the Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association.
