Taiwan's New High-Tech Patrol Ships: A Shift in Maritime Strategy

Taiwan's coast guard has taken a notable step by introducing the last of its 12 new patrol ships, poised for potential missile deployment during conflict. These Anping-class ships underscore a shift towards enhanced maritime strategy amid increasing tensions with China.

The vessels, developed from the navy's Tuo Chiang-class fast attack warships, are equipped to carry anti-ship missiles. At a ceremony in Kaohsiung, Ocean Affairs Council minister Kuan Bi-ling emphasized the coast guard's expanded role in defending Taiwan's sovereignty amidst rapidly changing international waters.

Kuan highlighted the ships' ability to transition into the navy's defense system if tensions escalate. This move is part of Taiwan's broader response to what it identifies as China's 'grey zone' tactics, including the regular deployment of warships and aircraft near Taiwanese waters.
