India's labour mobility partnership with Mauritius continues to gain momentum, with 14 skilled Indian workers departing for the island nation under a government-backed employment programme designed to create safe and structured overseas job opportunities.

The latest group was flagged off by Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary. Their departure follows the successful placement of the first batch of workers who have already travelled to Mauritius and started their jobs under the initiative. Another 33 candidates are currently completing work permit and documentation procedures, signalling growing demand for Indian talent through the bilateral programme.

Government-Backed Framework Opens Global Opportunities

Addressing the departing workers, Chaudhary said Indian professionals are earning increasing recognition worldwide for their skills, adaptability and work ethic. He noted that the expanding partnership between India and Mauritius reflects the confidence international employers have in Indian talent. According to the minister, the initiative is helping create transparent and reliable pathways for overseas employment while ensuring workers are prepared for the demands of global labour markets.

The programme operates under the Memorandum of Understanding on Employment of Workers signed by India and Mauritius in May 2023. The agreement promotes ethical recruitment practices, worker welfare, transparency and labour mobility aligned with the regulations of both countries.

The departing candidates represent seven Indian states. Six workers are from Uttar Pradesh, while Bihar and Himachal Pradesh each contribute two candidates. One worker each comes from Manipur, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab.

Their professional backgrounds span retail operations, logistics, hospitality, customer service and technical trades, demonstrating the wide range of skills being supplied through the programme.

Retail Chain Recruitment Drives Demand for Indian Talent

The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), which was designated in July 2025 to support the Economic Development Board of Mauritius in implementing the initiative, has played a key role in facilitating the programme.

Initial recruitment demand has come from Super U Mauritius, one of the country's leading retail chains. The company sought skilled Indian workers for positions including shelf workers, cashiers, cooks and electricians.

The selected candidates will take on responsibilities in retail operations, inventory management, customer service, food preparation and electrical maintenance. They will be employed under three-year contracts offering annual salaries of approximately ₹4 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh.

In addition to their salaries, workers will receive company-supported accommodation, local transportation, overtime benefits, work permits, medical coverage and other statutory benefits.

Officials say the programme reflects India's growing reputation as a trusted source of skilled talent for international markets. The initiative also supports the country's broader goals of improving employability, strengthening workforce readiness and creating global career opportunities for young Indians.

The flag-off event was attended by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Shri Niranjan Kumar Sudhansu, along with officials involved in the implementation of the programme.
