Taiwan Stands Firm Against Chinese Maritime Jurisdiction Claims
Taiwan's coast guard asserts its maritime sovereignty is inviolable amidst Chinese patrols near its waters. They criticized China's operations following talks between Japan and the Philippines about maritime boundaries. Taiwan vows to expel any attempts by China to exercise jurisdiction in its waters. The tension reflects longstanding territorial disputes.
Tensions are rising in the waters surrounding Taiwan as the island's coast guard declared its maritime sovereignty non-negotiable, following Chinese patrols off its eastern coast. China, displeased by recent maritime talks between Japan and the Philippines, sent ships to conduct operations near Taiwan, prompting a stern response from Taiwanese authorities.
Upon concluding their patrol, Chinese state media claimed extensive inspections of the area. However, Taiwan's coast guard has rebutted China's jurisdictional claims, stating that they will forcefully remove any Chinese ships attempting to assert control in their waters. Recent incidents of Chinese ships interacting with merchant vessels underscore the delicate situation.
Taiwan further reported a brief intrusion by Chinese government ships in restricted waters near Itu Aba in the South China Sea. The ships withdrew after being confronted by Taiwanese patrols. This ongoing naval posturing occurs against a backdrop of daily Chinese military activities near Taiwan, as the island's government consistently advocates for peaceful discussions about its future.
