Cyberabad police mulls use of Google maps for improve traffic management Hyderabad, Aug 23 (PTI): As part of easing traffic, the Cyberabad police is exploring the possibilities of utilising Google Maps traffic data for better management, an official release said on Friday. In view of ever growing traffic and frequent traffic congestion in IT corridor in Cyberabad, the Traffic police is taking various measures for better management of traffic in the area in coordination with all the stakeholders concerned.

To discuss the modalities to use Google data for traffic management, a meeting was held with the Google team here on August 22, it said. "There is an urgent need for understanding the scenario and future developments in the area with respect to demand on better traffic infrastructure in the area. This requires adoption of technology in management of traffic in the area," it added.

"In this background, Cyberabad Traffic Police are exploring the possibilities of utilising the Google Maps Traffic data to better manage the traffic," the release said. The proposed initiatives include operating the traffic signals in Cyberabad in dynamic mode, detection of traffic issues on the roads, management of major events at critical locations, it said.

The dynamic traffic signalling using Google data was tested at Gachibowli junction for two months last year-end with great success with approximately, around 30 per cent of waiting time and 50 per cent of queue lines could be reduced, as per the test results, the Cyberabad police said. The detection of traffic issues scientifically using Google data would help the road engineering departments in better utilising their resources for maximum benefit for the public.

And to streamline and put the technology initiatives on a sustainable mode, the traffic police would henceforth be working with Google, the release added..
