Turkey's right wing IYI Party has proposed that the mayors of Ankara and Istanbul serve as vice presidents if the opposition wins the May election, an IYI spokesperson said on Monday, after the party left the main opposition alliance last week.

Kursad Zorlu was speaking after Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavas and Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu visited IYI leader Meral Aksener. Earlier, Yavas, a member of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), said he wanted IYI to rejoin the alliance.

IYI split from the six-party alliance on Friday over a disagreement about the presidential candidate. Aksener had called on the mayors of Ankara and Istanbul to run for president - which they later appeared to reject.
