Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer on Tuesday commemorated the 36th full statehood day of Goa and called the state as the 'Pearl of the Orient' for its splendid natural beauty, vibrant culture, hospitable people and breathtaking beauty.

Commending the people of the coastal state who contributed greatly to national development, the Governor said Goa was known as 'Goa Dourada' or 'Golden Goa', owing to its beauty, prosperity and lucrative ports which facilitated trade with the West.

''Ek Bharat Shresth Bharat programme under which the formation days of different states and UTs are celebrated, aims to forge a strong relationship and bonding among people of the country, and enhance interaction and promote mutual understanding,'' said Nazeer in a press note shared by the Raj Bhavan. He further said this concept of oneness, enriched by the spirit of national integration, fraternity and universal brotherhood share a strong bond of 'One Nation - One People'.

Goa attained full statehood on May 30, 1987 to become the 25th state of India. It remained under Portuguese rule for 14 more years even after India achieving independence and had to be liberated from the European colonial power by the Indian armed forces on December 19, 1961 through 'Operation Vijay'.

Meanwhile, Wajeeha Tarannum, G Tejaswi, Sk Haseena and U Kalyani enthralled the audience with a Goan dance performance while Goan residents Mansi Maruti Harkare, Sahil Betigen, Pooja Vishwakarma and Shantashree Nerekar who are studying in and around Vijayawada spoke of their experiences.
