Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned, paving the way for an interim government, according to Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman. The announcement came amid nationwide protests.
In a televised address, Zaman took responsibility for the country, urging citizens to cooperate. Unconfirmed reports suggest Hasina has left for a city in India. The Army chief emphasized the need for law and order, requesting both Army and police forces to refrain from using firearms.
Violent protests have erupted over the controversial quota system, which reserves 30% of jobs for families of 1971 liberation war veterans. Over 100 people have died as a result of these demonstrations. Zaman called for restraint, urging protesters to cease violence immediately.
