Recent negotiations in Doha aimed at a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage deal have shown significant progress, according to a senior Biden administration official. Talks are set to continue in Cairo next week in an effort to finalize the deal.
'It was the consensus among all participants over the past 48 hours that there's really a new spirit here to drive it to a conclusion,' the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. However, the official cautioned that there is still work to be done.
On Friday, the U.S., along with mediators from Qatar and Egypt, proposed a bridging solution they believe addresses the remaining gaps between Israel and Hamas. The discussions occurred amid concerns about a potential regional escalation, especially with Iran's threats of retaliation following Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh's assassination in Tehran on July 31.
