Missouri Supreme Court Greenlights Abortion Rights Amendment for November Ballot
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled that a proposed amendment to restore abortion rights will appear on the November ballot. The decision followed verification of 250,000 petition signatures and reversed a lower court's ruling that had disqualified the measure. The amendment seeks to allow abortion until fetal viability, challenging the state's current total ban.
The Missouri Supreme Court on Tuesday confirmed that a proposed amendment to restore abortion rights in the state will appear on the November ballot. This decision permits voters to decide on the matter for the first time in over two years.
Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, the organization sponsoring the measure, celebrated the ruling as a triumph for direct democracy and reproductive freedoms. The court’s ruling follows a lower court’s decision that initially disqualified the measure but was overturned upon appeal.
The amendment proposes the right to abortion until fetal viability, which is supported by 52% of Missouri voters according to a recent poll. The issue will be on ballots in nine states this November, highlighting its significance in the upcoming presidential and congressional elections.
