Portugal Faces Political Turmoil as Government Collapses
Portugal's parliament voted against a motion of confidence in the minority government, leading to its collapse after just 11 months. The opposition questions Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's integrity, prompting President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to consider an early election, amid voter fatigue and political stalemate.
In a significant political development, Portugal's parliament struck down a confidence motion against the centre-right minority government, leading to its collapse after just 11 months in power. The motion, proposed by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, was defeated by a 142-88 margin with no abstentions.
The Prime Minister, whose integrity was challenged over his association with a consultancy firm now led by his sons, denied any wrongdoing. Montenegro urged that the idea of mixing personal business with political duties was baseless and fueled by populism. Now, the caretaker government awaits President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's decision on potentially calling an early election.
Analysts predict inevitable early polls but doubt any clear mandate will emerge. Political fatigue among voters looms large, making the political landscape fraught with uncertainty. A centrist alliance between the Social Democrats and Socialists might be the only path to stability, according to experts.
